Litany of the Saints

As I was preparing to enter the Catholic church and studying her teachings, it became increasingly apparent to me that many of my protestant beliefs about the Catholic Church were mistaken – and that the majority of the misunderstandings with which I had been raised were based almost entirely on what you might call a language barrier.  Protestants and Catholics use the same words, but mean different things, and that makes communication very challenging!  A couple of the words that Protestants and Catholics use very differently are worship, and prayer.  I’ve read a few really excellent articles on the subject of prayers to the saints that really helped me, and I’ll link some of them here.  If you have questions about the Catholic teaching regarding the intercession or veneration of saints, these are a great place to start!

Singing this Litany of the Saints at a recent mass brought a profound sense of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in heaven, as Hebrews 12 tells us:

1And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us:
2Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sitteth on the right hand of the throne of God.
